Two small phone companies merge

Sad day that Nokia has given up on phones. Although this deal “makes sense” in that it allows Microsoft to “make phones” and therefore compete with Apple and Google, it doesn’t make Nokia handsets any more desirable. They were only available with Windows anyway. Microsoft’s hardware record is mixed at best, and they haven’t any big hits that heavily used vertical integration. Bringing out a game-changer would surely require both a stunning new phone and a tailored operating system to match it. Some fancy footwork will be needed to achieve that without further alienating existing Windows Phone users.

And those six users are going to be really mad…
