All in the Mind is a factual programme on BBC R4 about psychology and, I guess, neuroscience. Today’s episode had some common sense – a simple hatchet job on IQ tests pointing out that results can’t be reproduced, and thus te tests have little precision. On the other hand, there was some frankly rather astonishing discussion of research into ‘Gaydar’. It’s a subject on which rather little research has been done, according to Claudia Hammond. Well, I wonder why. It’s complete rot like this segment that, I expect, puts a lot of people off of science coverage in the media.

Usually I would suggest: “don’t dignify junk”. Here’s the link anyway. To be fair, Claudia Hammond usually does a great job of debunking nonsense. For example, here she demolishes “we only use 10% of the brain”.
